The City of Lebanon, chartered as a town in 1761, is the anchor of the Lebanon, New Hampshire-Vermont "micropolitan" area. It covers 37 square miles, and includes the communities of Lebanon and West Lebanon, the largest community in the Upper Valley. Recently named among the most recession-proof economies in the nation, Lebanon is home to the region's major hospital--Dartmouth Hitchcock--and several high-tech industries.

Lebanon has small-town New England charm with affordable housing and stable employment opportunities. The City Center has several historic buildings and cultural activities. Nestled along the Mascoma and Connecticut Rivers, Lebanon is poised to assist high tech industries. Several distinguished shopping malls are located in West Lebanon, and the City has become a major shopping hub for the micropolitan area's 170,000 people. Yet in a recent National Citizen Survey, most residents reported that Lebanon was growing at an appropriate rate.

Neighboring communities include Hanover, NH, home of Dartmouth College and the CRELL/US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, and Hartford, VT, host to a major VA Medical Center. Lebanon is located at the junction of two interstates, with easy access to a municipal airport with commercial service, and commuter and freight rail service.

Real estate values have remained stable in Lebanon. We have a good mix of housing styles, including elderly housing. The Lebanon School District provides neighborhood schools, and collaborates with the Hartford Career and Technical Center in Hartford, Vermont. Within 20 miles there are several private schools, including Kimball Union Academy,Cardigan Mountain School, Thetford Academy, and several elementary private schools as well.

Opportunities for further education include a portion of Dartmouth Medical School, Lebanon College, Granite State College, NH Technical College, a Franklin Pierce College satellite campus, and satellite classes provided by River Valley Community College. Just outside of Lebanon are Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, and Community College of Vermont.

Lebanon has adapted a historic rail right-of-way for an extensive walking and bike trail, with about 25 miles of trails in the city limits. We have over 1700 acres of conserved land for recreational use, and 25 miles of hiking/walking and biking trails, and 79 acres of parks and recreational facilities throughout town and adjacent to the Connecticut and Mascoma Rivers. The City maintains its own ski area and ski jumping facilities, which have led local children to national and international events and competition.
