Somersworth is a city rich in history. The land which we know now as Rollinsford and Somersworth was originally in the town of Dover until 1729 known as the parish of Somersworth. In 1754, the parish of Somersworth became the town of Somersworth. During the early 1820s, construction of the textile mills at the larger waterfalls led to the development of the villages of Salmon Falls and Great Falls. A shift in the center of the population from Salmon Falls to Great Falls led in 1849 to the separation of Rollinsford from Somersworth. Somersworth was incorporated as a town in 1754 by Gov. Benning Wentworth and became a city in 1893.
Today Somersworth caters to families with a host of casual style restaurants and recreational activities. Hoyts Cinemas, located in the Tri City Plaza and Spinelli Cinemas, on Rt. 125 attract fans of the Big Screen. The York Wild Kingdom on Railroad Ave. in York Beach, Maine, is a mere 14 miles away. Meanwhile, the Hilltop Equestrian Center on Green Street offers horseback riding lessons.
