Closter is rich in history stemming from the Lenni Lenape Indians who first settled the land now known as Closter. Named after Frederick Closter of England, the Village of Closter played a key role in the fight for independence during the Revolutionary days, although no major battles were fought in Closter, it was a scene of numerous foraging raids by both the British and Continental armies. Closter was considered a hotbed of rebels and a threat to the loyal subjects of the King. Piermont Road was a focal point in the many raids and skirmishes which took place. A monument on Piermont Road recalls the Lone Horseman, who is credited with warning General Greene at Fort Lee that the British were coming.

Today Closter has many parks and recreational activities for residents many of which honor the cities finest who lost their lives serving their country. The Memorial Park located on Harrington Avenue is the centerpiece of the town's sporting events and recreational activities. This park has two ball fields. Soccer and football games are played here in the Fall. Most importantly Memorial Field is the home to the monument that honors Closter residents that gave their lives in defense of our country. Mollicone Park located on Knickerbocker Road is named in honor of Donald Mollicone who was killed in the Vietnam War. This park has a baseball field which is used for the younger children (up to 4th grade). The Girl Scout hut is located at Mollicone Park. Schauble Park located on Bergenline Avenue is named in honor of Kenneth Schauble who was killed in the Vietnam War. This park with a playground, basketball court, picnic tables, and a ballfield is used for Men's/Women's softball games and children's soccer. Amendola Park located on Willow Road is named in honor of James J. Amendola who was killed in the Vietnam War. This park, with a playground and picnic tables, has an idyllic setting of willow trees and a small stream. High Street Park located on High Street and Piermont Road has a playground and a basketball court. Ruckman Park located on Ruckman Road and Piermont Road has a playground, picnic tables, two tennis courts and basketball courts.
