Ewing Township was first settled by Thomas Hutchinson in 1679. It was first known as Hopewell Township, a part of Hunterdon County and continued under that name until the City of Trenton was established in 1792. At that time the territory from Calhoun Street, at the Delaware River to the present northern boundary was known as Trenton Township.

Trenton (Ewing Township) Township was formed by an Act of the New Jersey State Legislature on February 22, 1834. The name of the Township was changed from Trenton Township to Ewing Township township in honor of Charles Ewing Township township, late Chief Justice of New Jersey.

This well developed suburban area includes some rolling hills near the Delaware River.
