The Franklin Township School District is an award winning, highly competitive and comprehensive K-12 educational system, comprised of nine (9) schools, approximately five thousand five hundred (5,500) students and over seven hundred (700) staff. Earlier, in 1995, the growing community approved a $17.5 million building referendum than includes a 900 student K-6 elementary school and additions to two other elementary schools.
Student and staff accomplishments frequently include state and national recognition. Elementary students participating in the Science and Technology Program have consistently achieved a ranking in the top five percent (5%) in National Science Olympiad Competition. Middle school and senior high school music students have performed at the White House, the New Jersey Governor's Mansion, State House, and numerous corporate and community events. Athletic teams consistently win county and State championships in football, track and swimming. High school graduates attend Harvard, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Yale and a wide range of four-year colleges and universities. Hillcrest Science and Technology School has been recognized as one of the nation's top schools by Redbook magazine. Kingston Classical Humanities and International Studies School has been recognized as a New Jersey Best Practice School The staff have also brought high honors to the school district including the 1994-95 Somerset County Teacher of the Year, Rutgers University Hall of Fame, and numerous coaches of the Year.
At the elementary level, the district has implemented intra-district choice of three (3) magnet school programs: science and technology; fine, visual, and performing arts; and in areas of classical humanities and international studies. In the primary grades, parents may also choose either a traditional or early childhood program organization of either a two and one-half (2-1/2) or four (4) hour kindergarten session. Multi-year classes may also be selected at the primary level.
The school system provides a comprehensive educational program including: college level advanced placement courses, basic skills improvement, bilingual instruction in Spanish and Gujarati, English as a Second Language, gifted and talented and special education. Academically talented high school students have the opportunity to take university level courses a Rutgers and Princeton, in the tuition free "Franklin Township High School/University Program." The district also operates an environmental education center located on ninety-six (96) acres of open space property and operated by a full time environmentalist providing field study, seminars and workshops for students, staff and community members. Extended day programs are offered at all schools and include academic enrichment, tutorial support, performing groups and recreational activities. A fee-based childcare program is provided in grades K-8 for before and after school hours. At the secondary level, performance at the highest caliber is consistently demonstrated in an extensive interscholastic athletic program for individual and teams sports and a performing arts program that includes and orchestra, marching, concert, and jazz bands, guitar ensemble, chorus , madrigal singers, art exhibits and theatrical productions.
