Matawan, originally part of New Aberdeen, was settled by Scotch Presbyterians in the 1680s. At one time the community also was known as Middletown Point. Matawan Township was formed in 1857, and Matawan Borough was organized in 1885. After gaining prominence as a seaport, the community became famous for its ability in brick-making, canning and ceramics. At one time Matawan was considered one of the leading industrial communities on the Jersey Shore. As one of the oldest communities in the region, Matawan is home to a number of historic sites featuring various styles of architecture, including those dating from the Victorian era.
The Matawan of today, has a variety of businesses and industries. The chief industries are professional services, retail and manufacturing. The chief occupations are administrative, managerial and professional. Matawan's residents and business owners volunteer with the Matawan Downtown Alliance, an organization focused on beautification and economic development of the borough. Each September, the residents gather together to celebrate pride in the past at Matawan Day. About half of the residents work inside the county. The average commute is 28.9 minutes.
