During the colonial era, this river valley hamlet saw numerous Revolutionary War troop movements including being the headquarters of Gen. George Washington in 1783. Copper mines and ore quarries were early commercial enterprises, but it was the completion of the Delaware & Raritan Canal and a railroad spur in 1864 that brought sudden commercial and industrial growth to the area. Today, Rocky Hill is predominantly a residential suburb of Princeton and has retained its rural charm and small town atmosphere.
Recreation in the area is abundant and the variety changes with the seasons. Centered between the 3,785 acre Delaware-Raritan Canal State Park and the 85 acre Princeton Battlefield State Park, a myriad of historical spots as well as the splendor of New Jersey's rural countryside are the perfect backdrop for hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming, picnicking, bird watching, playing, fishing, horseback riding, or just plain relaxing. The Canal features 19th-century bridges, bridgetender houses, past and present locks, cobblestone spillways and hand-built stone-arched culverts while the Battlefield still proudly displays the famous Mercer Oak, marking the spot where General Hugh Mercer fell during the Battle of Princeton.
