Incorporated in 1798, Roxbury Township contains some of the oldest settlements in the county. Original settlements include historic Succasunna, Ledgewood and Kenvil. The Morris Canal, fed by water from Lake Hopatcong, provided transportation and stimulated economic development in the township.

One of the earliest industries in the township was the Hercules Powder Plant. Operations have ceased at the 600-acre site, which is now the focus for redevelopment along the Howard Boulevard/Interstate 80 interchange and Mt. Arlington Park and Ride.

The township has become a major regional shopping destination for the western portion of the county and has been one of the most rapidly growing municipalities in the county.

This township is again sought after because of its proximity to all the local highways and transportation systems. It is scattered with strip malls as well as the Ledgewood mall which hosts such stores as Linen&Things, Home Depot, Sterns, Walmart to name a few. With the vast array of housing types available from Adult housing to condos, townhomes, historic, older and new single family homes it is a very diversified community with availability and affordability for most based on their individual needs.

In academic performance, Roxbury Township students repeatedly exceed national norms on standardized tests of reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies. Also offered is a strong environmental education program. Not far from the Township is the famed Rabbinical College Of America, where students receive a wonderful, rich education.
