This is an affluent and well educated population of approximately 23,000 located in four square miles tucked in the Valley of the Watchung Mountains. Quiet tree lined streets wind through town with fascinating architectural examples of every description. You will see stately Tudors, charming Victorians, gracious Colonials and an occasional Contemporary, Most of the town's housing stock was built in the 1920's, and the homes reflect the vitality and quality construction of that era. The town center for Maplewood is a quaint four block center with commuter train access to New York City. Many new residents of Maplewood are former city people looking for a little of the sophisticated quiet we have to offer and improving their commute to NYC jobs at the same time. Commuting convenience is wonderful with the Midtown Direct Trains or New Jersey Transit Line to the Hoboken Path Train to NYC (under 30 minutes). Free jitney/minibus service is available to residents to and from the station eliminating the hassle of parking for many who live out of walking distance to the station. The train is also an easy way to get to Newark Penn Station, Gateway Center, and the NJ Performing Arts Center. We are also convenient to major highways, Route 78, Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike, plus only 20 minutes to Newark International Airport.

There are fantastic recreational facilities include a world class community pool, tennis courts, basketball and paddle tennis courts, jogging course, ice skating in the winter, plus a network of 53 acres of neighborhood parks. The Park System is always buzzing with kids team league sports like soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and soft ball. Recreational programs run year round. Hiking is great in the 2000+ acre South Mountain Reservation bordering the west end of town. Annual activities include the fourth of July kids Circus and fireworks display plus the New Year's Eve First Night Celebration.

Maplewood has always had a flair for the arts. There is a Cultural Center which is home to local productions of the Maplewood Strollers Theater Group. It is easy to find activities that will appeal to you with choices like Junior League, Newcomers' Club, Garden Club, and Women's Club. Many nationally known artists, writers, actors, and musicians make this their home close to the city and Paper Mill Playhouse.

The Village center is right out of a Norman Rockwell painting and is the heart of town. There is hardly ever a reason to leave with a great variety of excellent restaurants, gourmet take out caterers, an upscale grocery store, coffee shops, bagel shop, ice cream stores, pizza parlors, and bakery, plus service retailers, theater, pharmacy, banks, and cleaners all in a wonderful quaint setting.

The excellent school system has four grade schools, one middle school, a shared high school, plus two libraries. The curriculum and tracking system offer every student the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. Columbia High School consistently readies a high percentage for college, sending graduates to the best schools in the nation, and turning out many National Merit Scholars.
