Population: 16,400 Located in Essex County

South Orange, New Jersey

This is an affluent and well educated population of approximately 16,000 located in 2.75 square miles tucked in the Valley of the South Mountain Reservation. Quiet tree lined streets with trademark gaslights wind through town with an amazing number of spectacular architectural examples. Grand Tudors, gracious Colonials and many historically important Victorians, plus a sprinkling of more contemporary homes makes this town a treat for the eyes. Many of the historic homes were built in the late 1800's when wealthy New York Families settled here. Most of the important Tudors and Colonials were built by the 1920's and reflect the vitality and quality construction of that era. However homes have continued to be built through this year around the Village.

Recreation: There are wonderful recreational facilities including a free community pool, 17 tennis courts, basketball and paddle tennis courts, jogging course, acres of neighborhood parks, plus great hiking in the 2,000+ acre South Mountain Reservation bordering the west end of town. Among the annual activities are the July 4th fireworks display and the New Years Eve 1st Night celebration which is shared with neighboring Maplewood.

Cultural: The Village of South Orange has always had a flair for the Arts. The Baird Community Center is host to a variety of cultural events. We also have the Village Players, South Orange Symphony, plus free out door jazz concerts during the summer in the park. There is also an annual sidewalk art show. Many nationally known artists, writers, actors, and musicians make the Village home because it is so close to the City and Millburn's Papermill Playhouse. Ground breaking will be soon for the new Performing Arts Conference Center in the heart of downtown.

Education: There are superb educational opportunities within the highly rated school system shared with Maple wood and the exciting Adult school. There are also the intellectual advantages provided by Seton Hall University. We can send you a school report for the area.

Access: Commuting convenience is wonderful with the Midtown Direct Trans or New Jersey Transit Line to the Hoboken Path Train to NYC (under 30 minutes). Additional parking spaces were just added to accommodate residents who are out of walking distance to one of the two town train station. The train is also an easy way to get to Newark Penn Station, Gateway Center and the NJ Performing Arts Center. We are also convenient to major highways, Route 78, Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike, plus only 20 minutes to Newark International Airport.
