The Borough of Watchung was organized on April 20, 1926 and covers an area of approximately 6.2 aquare miles. Watchung was settled in the early eighteenth century and grew slowly until recent years. In the last decade or so, it has grown quite dramatically, although it has not lost its country feel.
Watchung is conveniently located close to Westfield, and Plainfield, and is also a very manageable commute to Newark, and New York City. Nestled between two ridges of the Rocky Mountains, the community of Watchung, is bordered by both Morris and Union Counties. Watchung, meaning "high place", is a name believed to have been given to the area by the Lenni-Lenape Indians.
When Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1700's, they came to the Watchung region to take advantage of the rich soil. The region was well known as a thriving agricultural area. In the 1800's the area drew the wealthy from the city and mansions began springing up on the ridges. The wealthy mystique of the town continues today.
New Jersey is not called the "garden state" for nothing! The homes in Watchung reflect that, with many of the homes built on generous lots, and many of them over an acre in size. Along with the sizeable yards, comes a sizeable price tag In fact, to find a home that costs less than $600,000 in the Borough is next to impossible. But the homes are luxurious, boasting the latest in great amenities.
Not only are the homes wonderful, but the school district prides itself on its first rate education. Students have a wide variety of options when it comes to tertiary education, and with the Big Apple not far away, choices in careers, arts, music, and such are wide open.
