Woolwich Township is a rural community located in the southwestern portion of Gloucester County, New Jersey. The township currently consists of approximately 2,000 residents, although its natural beauty and rural lifestyle, coupled with easy access to major highways and the City of Philadelphia are drawing more and more families who seek a quiet lifestyle.
Plans have begun on a development by the Summitt Corporation named Weatherby. This development plan calls for 4,500 units to be built on 1,600 township acres. The general development plan calls for single-family units, townhouses, semi-detached or twin units and age-restricted units. The plan also includes a town center district, schools, and open spaces.
All in all, the Township of Woolwich has seen many changes over the past two centuries. Those changes will continue into the coming century as the township continues to grow and evolve. The Township of Woolwich and the Borough of Swedesboro have a joint partnership in the area of recreation. The Parks and Recreation Committee annually sponsors events such as roller and ice-skating trips, bowling, a community Halloween party/dance and an Easter Egg hunt.
The Parks and Recreation Committee assists in funding the youth sports programs as well. Little League and Soccer programs are available for children aged five to high school. Contact the Municipal Clerk for contacts and sign-up information.
In 1996 the Borough of Swedesboro and the Township of Woolwich jointly purchased twenty-three acres of land on Locke Avenue. Construction of the Locke Avenue Park facility began in late summer of 1998. The Grand Opening was held in September 2000 at this facility that houses numerous ball fields, a walking trail, playground, and concession stand. This is an exciting prospect for Borough and Township children and their parents.
