Located in southwestern New Mexico, just 33 miles from the Mexico border, is the city of Deming. With the Florida Mountains in the background, Deming is an oasis in the middle of this desert. Because Deming is situated at a high elevation (4,331 feet), the area enjoys a gentler climate compared to other desert areas. Sunshine is also enjoyed during the winter months, with the thermometer averaging in the 50's. Humidity is at an all time low during the winter season, sometimes as low as 5%.

Located just 12 miles southeast of Deming is Rockhound State Park. This is a popular place for desert hiking, rock collecting and picnicking. One unique thing is, at this state park, the rocks are yours for the taking, if you can take them that is! Even a steel hammerhead is not strong enough to pry some of these rocks from their desert home. You will certainly enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife that call this desert land their home.

For a picturesque view of volcanic art, visit the City of Rocks State Park, also located near Deming. This state park is like a wonderland of beautiful rock shaped by wind, rain, volcanic ash and other natural elements. City of Rocks Park allows for camping, as well as hiking and bicyclers. Other exciting hot spots in the Deming area include the Gila Cliff Dwellings, The Catwalk, Spring Canyon State Park and Elephant Butte Lake State Park.
