Portales, New Mexico The name Portales fits this charming University town even more today than it did when it was coined in the late 1800's. Named for a nearby cowboy campsite where spring waters gushed from a series of caves like porches across a pueblo styled house. Portales, or "porches" in Spanish, is an entryway into New Mexico on the Eastern border. It is also a door to a rich human history which stretches back 11,000 years through cattle baron era to the Paleo-Indian mastodon hunters. Today, Portales is a gateway to industry, education, culture and recreation. A sunny, dry climate and 4,000 foot elevation make Portales a natural for outdoor sports. Swim, golf, hunt, play tennis or handball, bowl, hike, camp or just bask in the sun under the clear blue New Mexico skies. The leading crops are peanuts, cotton, wheat, corn, milo, hay and potatoes. Livestock feeding and dairy farming are also important to the local economy. Industrial enterprises include grain alcohol distilling plants, soft drink canneries, grain storage and shipping, and trucking.
