A ruggedly beautiful Westchester hamlet, Armonk has preserved the charm of the past and offers a sophisticated country setting just 35 miles from Manhattan. It occupies 16.3 square miles and makes up more than two-thirds of North Castle, a sprawling 26 square mile town. Less than an hour's commute to New York City, it has many parks and recreation areas and an outstanding school system. Armonk has a population of 6,312. Its character, though largely residential, maintains its rural charm through careful zoning. The majority of residential land is zoned for one and two acres. Armonk gets its name from a Siwanoy Indian word. Surrounded by seven communities including Greenwich, Armonk is separated from the city of White Plains by seven miles of watershed wilderness. Armonk offers a desirable residential setting and is noted for its historical landmarks. One, the Smith Tavern, is a museum complex located on Route 22. It includes a blacksmith shop and a one-room schoolhouse, and is now home of the North Castle Historical Society. In the 1800's it was a farm, tavern, store, post office and militia headquarters. Up until 1954, the Old Brundage Blacksmith Shop in the premises supplied everything from horseshoes to hoes and sickles. Transportation: Commuting to New York City by train is by Metro North from the North White Plains station. The express train takes 40 minutes. Parking is provided for private cars. Bordered by Interstate 684 and Routes 120 and 22, Armonk has attracted many blue chip companies, including IBM (International Business Machines). Semi-rural Armonk still maintains a relaxed lifestyle. Education: The Bryam Hills Central School District boasts one of the highest standings in the state and the student's score well above the national level in standardized achievement tests and national scholarships. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The adult community of Bryam Hills is well educated, overwhelmingly professional and very supportive of its schools. Recreation: North Castle has 1,712 acres of open space; outdoor activities include golf, fishing, and tennis, hiking and ice-skating. The hamlet has two private country clubs. There are several public golf courses in the area, and many more within 10 miles of Armonk. Shopping: Shopping is convenient and many village shops are located in the heart of Armonk. Nearby in White Plains are the Galleria Mall and the newly opened "The Westchester" mall, which features many upscale stores including Abercrombie & Fitch, Liz Claiborne and Williams Sonoma. Armonk has an unusual array of restaurants; gourmet food stores and take-out establishments along Main Street. Today, Armonk is a community that is ensuring an orderly rate of growth in order to preserve the quality of environment. Citizen participation in town affairs has been a long-standing tradition.
