New York Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Babylon, New York

Population: 13,000

Located in Suffolk County

The naming of Babylon has its roots in the early 1800's. A man named Nathaniel Conklin took his family with him and moved out of the New York hills northward and built a house. It was Nathaniel's mother who first termed her new home "Babylon". It is said that Mrs. Conklin was not happy in a spot where her grandchildren would be brought up with a tavern as their neighbor, and compared their lonely lot to that of the Babylon captivity of the exiled Judeans.

Belmont Lake State Park is located in the township of Babylon. Activities for this park include boating, fishing, picnicking, biking, horseback riding, hiking and cross-country skiing. The park also has playing fields, horseshoe and basketball courts and playgrounds.

Babylon is nestled on the south shore of Long Island on Great South Bay. Cedar Beach is definitely the place to be in summer! There is great swimming, and we have wonderful tidal flats (great for looking for sea-shells!) and a beautiful lighthouse. Fishing is plentiful here too, and Babylon has a charter fleet of boats.

And the great outdoors is only a part of the charm that makes Babylon a great place to live! Other interests and activities that will capture your spirit are the many fine restaurants, and shopping areas.

Housing here is rather select because of the rich history of Long Island, but if you are looking for a piece of real estate on the Island, you certainly will not go wrong looking here in Babylon. Homes tend to be older, and historic, and there are societies who try to maintain the preservation of the downtown areas of Babylon as well as the homes themselves.

Babylon is part of the rich heritage of Long Island, which includes quaint bays, harbors and many villages on Great South Bay. For quality of life, a slow pace and yet proximity to the major cities in the area, you can't beat Babylon!
