...founded in 1810 by Captain Reuben Perkins and Incorporated as a village in 1835. Our picturesque streets and homes welcome you to the village nicknamed Title Town USA, home of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. History abounds with the "Old Erie Canal" located in the heart of the village. Canastota Canal Town Museum has preserved a way of life long past but still live today in displays and pictures. Canastota--Our Heritage What is now present-day Canastota was founded by Reuben Perkins who came to the Quality Hill area in 1807 by stagecoach from Litchfield, Connecticut. The deed was received by Reuben Perkins three years later in 1810 from the State for the Canastota Reservation as it was then known. Today this is the business district. The word Canastota is an anglicized form of the Oneida Indian word Kniste-Stota which roughly means cluster of pines near still or silent waters, referring to a pine tree lodged in two other pine trees across Canastota Creek just north of present-day James Street near the railroad tracks. Over the next 150 years this once hemlock-laden forest became a thriving village producing a variety of goods including furniture, sleds matches, tire chains, farm equipment, knives, etc. The mucklands to the northwest of the Village, previously part of the vast Great Swamp, were developed in the 1880s. Peppermint and celery were the first crops grown in the section. Onions later became the king crop. Today, much of this area is no longer being used to grow crops and is being reverted back to its natural wetlands state. In the 1970's, like other communities across the state, Canastota began a period of deterioration and decay with many vacant store fronts. The main cause seems to have been excessive taxation and restrictive zoning. With these obstacles many business owners decided it was time to shut the doors and retire, while others decided to relocate to more business-friendly states in the South. At the present time there has been an upswing especially in the retail and financial institutions in the Village. Canastota, however, remains a bedroom community in North-Central Madison County 20-miles equal distant between Syracuse and Rome where many desire to live because of its rural character and quaint village charm.
