Located in Cayuga County
Whether you prefer village or rural living, Cato offers it all with local food and hardware stores, churches, a full service bank, and the S.B. Land Memorial Library, connected by computer to the 3-member Finger lakes Library System. Located between the villages of Cato and Meridian is a medical center with physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, and Cayuga County Health Department Well-Child Clinic.
Cato-Meridian (our pre-K through 12 school district) offers four years of science, Advanced Placement courses, and a nationally recognized technology program. Many institutions of higher learning are located within easy driving distances: Syracuse University, Cornell University, Wells College, SUNY Oswego, the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Cayuga and Onodaga Community Colleges, to name but a few. And we sit on the edge of the "super computer triangle" formed by RIT, Cornell and Syracuse Universities.
There are plenty of ways to unwind in "Cato-Country". Meridian and Cato villages each have their own recreational facilities: the latter is the site of a nine-hole golf course, and is the southern terminus of a 16 mile county multi-use recreational trail. Ponds and lakes abounding with fish are nearby, and the elusive Chinook salmon issues his challenge from Lake Ontario, 15 miles to the north. Cross Lake (directly connected to New York's canal system), Fair Haven on Lake Ontario (where there's also a state park) and Sodus Bay (a few miles further west) offer boat moorage and dockage. Alpine skiers will find many slopes only an hour away, and cross-country enthusiasts can often ski from their back doors.
Land use controls are in effect in the Towns of Cato and Ira, and in the villages of Cato and Meridian, including zoning, subdivision, site plan reviews and active, supportive planning boards. While rural residents depend on their own wells, public water service is available in the Village of Cato, private service in other areas. Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. provides electric service and plans to offer natural gas to the area in the near future.
