Cohoes, New York
Population: 15,521 Located in Albany County
Cohoes is located in upstate New York at the mouth of the Mohawk River where it joins the Hudson River in the Capital District. The elevation above mean sea level varies from 10 to 310 feet. The Mohawk River runs across the northern boundary from west to east and drops approximately 170 feet before it empties into the Hudson River runs along its easterly boundary. The city may be divided into three areas: (1) The Islands (Van Schaick and Simmons); (2) the River Plain; and (3) the Western Plateau. Cohoes was originally a manufacturing center. The textile mills took advantage of the water power. However, with the advent of cheaper electric power and labor force in the South, this industry has relocated over the decades. The original industrial buildings are not conductive to compete with modern facilities. Still, Cohoes has a decent amount of industrial activity. When looking at the magnificence of the Cohoes Falls one is taken back to a time of grandeur once present in the time of the Iroquois Confederacy . There remains a remnant of their admiration for the Falls in an Indian legend, one of the Hiawatha tales. The mastodon exhibited in the State Museum consisted of two mounted skeletons and a life-size restoration of an American mastodon in front of huge mural of the southeastern Catskills, during the last stages of the glacial retreat. Currently the exhibition is under going reconstruction. http://www.ci.cohoes.ny.us/index.cfm
