Not only are we recognized for our first class municipal services, but also for our Award Winning Public Safety Services. In 2003 the Town was ranked as the 7th safest community in the United States. The Town has a modern library, numerous historical sites, cultural and community events, recreational areas such as the Crossings of Colonie, the Town's new 130-acre passive park, fine dining, shopping and an array of other services and activities. Whether you are young or old, Colonie has something to offer to each of its' residents. Since its inception, the Town has steadily grown to become the largest and most populous suburb in Albany County with 57.2 square miles and nearly 80,000 residents. The newly renovated and expanded Albany International Airport is located within the borders of the Town, and the Amtrak Railway is a short drive away. Colonie is bounded on the north by the Mohawk River and on the East by the navigable Hudson River. The Town of Colonie, a Town of the first class (in New York, towns are either first or second class depending upon their size), is one of 932 towns in the State of New York. It ranks 16th in population, and is the largest of the 10 towns in Albany County. Colonie is truly close to everything, only 3 hours from Boston, 2 1/2 hours from New York City, 4 hours from Montreal and 1 hour from the Adirondack Park. We have some of the finest dining, shopping, lodging and most especially neighborhoods in which to reside and raise a family in the Capital Region. The Town has a low tax rate and a strong economy. As a result of careful fiscal planning Town residents have seen very few tax increases over the past seven years and actually saw decreases two of those years. Also, as a result of our strong financial position we have been assigned a very high credit rating of AA3, one of the highest in the Capital Region by Moody's Investor's Services. This results in substantial savings to the Town, passed on to the residents, from lower interest rates. Quality of Life When one decides to live in the Town, they can be assured of the finest police protection, excellent youth and a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The Town was recently named the 7th Safest Community in the United States in a ranking compiled by Morgan Quinto Press, a Lawrence, Kansas based research company. All 350 communities with populations of 75,000 and above that report crime data to the FBI are included in this study. Whether young or old, Colonie has something to offer all new residents. If you enjoy recreational activities, the Town has a 150-acre park which includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, hiking trails, and access to boating on the Mohawk River. The Crossings offers approximately 6 miles of trails, formal and informal gardens, picnic pavilions, a barrier-free playground and many other amenities for your enjoyment. Other recreational opportunities in the Town include 15 neighborhood pocket parks, tennis and basketball courts, skating rinks, a 36-hole championship golf course and a 5.5 mile long bike trail. Located in the heart of Colonie, the William K. Sanford Town Library, with close to 175,000 holdings, offers a full range of services including an award winning children's section, access to the Internet, a complete business reference center, and many programs for both children and adults throughout the year.
