Greater Syracuse is a nexus for the movement of goods and people along the north-south and east-west axes of many transportation routes in the Northeast. Located in the center of New York on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is a 3,400-square-mile land area composed of four counties Cayuga, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego.

East Syracuse, located in Onondaga County, is the region' s major metropolitan center. It has been appropriately called the Crossroads of New York State, due to its central location and the fact the State's two major interstate routes the east-west New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) and north-south Interstate 81 intersect here.

East Syracuse is a region of rolling hills, flat plains, lakes and streams. The gently rolling terrain stretches north of the city for 30 miles, where it meets Lake Ontario. The Finger Lakes begin 20 miles to the southwest and Oneida Lake is eight miles northeast.

What's in a Name? Syracuse was named after an ancient city in Sicily. In 1819 a committee was appointed to settle on a name for this place. Syracuse was proposed by John Wilkinson because of the similarities he noticed between the description of ancient Siracusa in Sicily and the characteristics of this area; both had salt-water springs and a town to the north called Salina. The committee chose the name by unanimous vote.

The City of Syracuse contains an impressive collection of buildings representative of its dynamic growth from two small crossroad villages into an important urban area. Many of these structures still stand as originally designed, and are in use today. Others have undergone rehabilitation and are being used for new purposes. From high-style designs to small dwellings, this wide variety of extant buildings constitutes an important connection between the people who first used these buildings, and those who walk through their doors today.
