Fort Drum is a military installation located 9 miles east of Watertown, New York and about 75 miles north of Syracuse, New York. It is the hub of this area, and creates added revenue for the nearby town of Watertown. Housing for staff is available both on the base and off. Fort Drum is very proud of the fact that they are able to house more junior enlisted soldiers and their families than any other FORSCOM installation. Fort Drum offers 2,272 sets of quarters on post and 2,000 sets of quarters in thirteen neighboring communities, ranging from Lowville at the foothills of the spectacular Adirondacks, to Clayton on the St. Lawrence River. Homes are for the most part extremely affordable in this northern region of New York and staff have a choice of apartment living, town houses or single family dwelling. Depending on the type of housing, staff may have the opportunity to buy a house, or rent. Rentals are definitely more popular and the community is prepared, willing and able to help the military with that. Most places rent for less than $900 a month, making them accessible to most military families. Located in the Thousand Islands region of northern New York, between Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Adirondack Mountains, Fort Drum's soldiers and families enjoy one of the most beautiful and unique areas in the US. Winter and summer sports abound. Shopping, arts, education, and entertainment are found in Watertown and on a much larger scale in Syracuse, just an hour away. Facilities are among the newest that the Army has to offer. Military family housing units, built from 1986-87, are located both on post and off post in the surrounding communities. For the outdoorsman, picturesque scenery of the Adirondacks opens the way to the 1,000 Islands region and Lake Ontario. Boating, fishing, rafting, hiking, camping and quaint rural atmosphere abounds. The history buff will appreciate the glorious old homes and the wealth of information at the library, the museum and historian's office. A short drive around the area brings you to Historic Sackets Harbor and many other fascinating places! Fort Drum welcomes you and your family! With lovely scenery, plenty of recreational opportunities and many activities for all the members of the family, regardless of age, you are sure to find yourself falling in love with Fort Drum!
