On Long Island, there lies an area known as the "Nautical Mile" on Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport. The street is a nautical mile long with a variety of seafood restaurants, stores, and charter boat docks. Few places on Long Island capture the essence of life at sea like the "Nautical Mile" in Freeport. On one side of the street are restaurants; on the other are boat docks. One of the more popular restaurants on the street is Otto's Sea Grill. Established in 1929, Otto's is accessible by land or by sea. Another restaurant on the "Nautical Mile" is The Schooner. As is the case with many of the restaurants on Woodcleft Avenue, The Schooner has docking facilities and features a spectacular water view. Other great seafood restaurants on the "Nautical Mile" include The Crab Shack, The Tides, The Nautilus Cafe, Ehrhart's Clam House, and Johnny's Dockside Restaurant. A number of gift shops are sprinkled along the street. Water Lilies Gift Shop, Frank's Art Shack, Whale's Tail Giftshop, and the Seahorse Giftshop offer a variety of nautical based gifts. In addition, there are plenty of boat dealers. Fred Chall Boat Sales, Star Island Boat Sales, Woodcleft Marine Sales, Outboard Service Sales, and Shelter Point Sales are just a few of the many boat dealers along Woodcleft Avenue. There are a number of "party boats" and cruise lines that will take you on fishing and dining excursions off the coast of Long Island. The Nautical Queen Riverboat hosts private parties, weddings, anniversary parties, and birthdays. For the fisherman, Captain Lou's Fishing Fleet, Captain Doug's Fishing Fleet, Starstream Ocean Fishing, and Bluefin Fishing Fleet all take fisherman out to sea for the "catch of the day." During heavy rains, Woodcleft Avenue tends to flood. At high tide, the water from the Woodcleft Canal usually floods the streets resulting in local storeowners using rowboats in the streets. Though you're unlikely to see anglers such as Frank Bama fishing there, the "Nautical Mile" usually draws crowds from all over Long Island. If you're feeling "land locked", the "Nautical Mile" on Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport is a great getaway.
