In the mid 1800's, cotton, wool and saw mills, iron works and tanneries were some of the businesses in the Town and Village of Manlius. In 1825, the Erie Canal ran across the Town, and then created a partnership in travel in 1839 when the railroad was built. In 1908, the Topp brothers, William and Jae, built an airplane in their shop on Mill Street, only five years after the first Wright Brothers flight. In the 1940's, the railroad yard became one of the largest in the northeast, and handled a majority of transfers for all of Northern New York. Between 1960 to 1970, the Village of Manlius was the fastest growing village in New York State. In 1994, the Town of Manlius celebrated its 200th anniversary.
