Mendon, New York

Located twelve miles southeast of Rochester, the Town of Mendon, which includes the Village of Honeoye Falls and the Hamlet of Mendon, is a bustling community. A Seneca Indian village, Totiakton, had been founded in this area, and an explorer coming upon the village in the year 1677 gauged the population to be about 1,000. Long houses, typical of the Senecas, were located along the creek and artifacts found over the years have substantiated this claim.

The town, as we know it was founded in 1791 by Zebulon Norton a native of Connecticut. He came to western New York and purchased 1820 acres of land, at 12.5 cents per acre, on Honeoye Creek. He built a grist mill on the site of the Town of Mendon office and a saw mill on the falls on the opposite side on the creek.

Almost immediately, a village flourished. By 1822 a lively little hamlet with mills, stores, a school, a post office and churches had evolved. The creek played a large part in the life of the inhabitants with its mills and factories along the banks. A bridge had been built in 1810 connecting both sides of the village making for a larger and more closely-knit community. By this time the village was known as West Mendon. Like Rochester, this tiny community built its factories and mills along the upper and lower falls of its water supply.

Throughout the years, with careful planning, the village has grown and prospered. Today the community boasts of an excellent Central School system with an enrollment of 1,924 young people.

The many old homes on the tree-lined streets are intermingled with new and modern ones. A visit to Mendon will lead you through the tree-lined streets where several well-maintained "grand old ladies" reside – houses built through the late 1800s and early 1900s with the quality craftsmanship and architectural detailing so popular during those times.

But if your tastes run more to the modern, new developments offer housing with all the latest amenities from luxurious master bathrooms to high-tech kitchens. Best of all, our housing is extremely affordable. The average sale price of a home in is $95,000, with homes ranging in price from $40,000 for a "fixer-upper" to $325,000.

The shopping area of the village boasts drug stores, a variety store, furniture stores, an auto parts distributor, a gardening outlet, a hobby shop, a lumber yard, automobile agencies and a supermarket. Lawyers, doctors, dentists, insurance agencies, optometrists, and veterinarians have offices located within walking distances of the village shopping area.
