New York Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Merrick, New York

Population: 24,000

Located in Nassau County

Merrick, since it is located near the sea, on the South Shore of Long Island, is one of the older communities on the Island. The name Merrick, meaning "peaceful," is derived from the name of a local Indian tribe, the Meroke, who inhabited what is now the southeastern section of Nassau County. The Indian economy was mixed, with a concentration on farming, supplemented by hunting and fishing.

Merrick offers the excitement of seeing a NHL hockey game at the Nassau Coliseum, Triple Crown thoroughbred racing a Belmont Park, and star-studded concerts at the Westbury Music Fair and Jones Beach open air theater. Many arboretums and historical sites, such as Old Bethpage Village Restoration, are located in this region.

But the piece d'resistance along the South Shore are the three exquisite barrier beach islands, including world famous Jones Beach State Park, a six-mile beach and 2,400-acre playground. White, pristine sand stretches from the suburban city of Long Beach to the unique vacation communities of Fire Island. Fire Island is designated a National Seashore with a wildlife preserve and a restored 138-year-old lighthouse. Only 32 miles long, this barrier island, accessible by passenger ferry, is home to 17 small summer communities.

Winter is a time of stunning beauty and tranquility that invites thrilling activities such as snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing, or the cozy relaxation of enjoying a good book by a fireplace.

And the great outdoors is only a part of the charm that makes Merrick a great place to live! Other interests and activities that will capture your spirit are the many fine restaurants, museums and shopping outlets.

Today, due in large part to its good location and fine schools, Merrick remains one of the most desirable and affordable South Shore communities. Merrick has the best of everything - great commute near the Big Apple, wonderful schools and the peace and quiet of a beach town that just can't be beat!
