New York Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Pittsford, New York

Population: 24,500

Located in Monroe County

Pittsford has come a long way from the 1920's when people watched silent movies at the Town Hall, played baseball and croquet and rode the steamboat "Rambler" for entertainment. Today, residents of Pittsford have a variety of private and public recreational opportunities in a town that places a high regard on the quality of life. Our economy has remained stable, without the highs and lows of many other areas of the country.

A suburb of Rochester, with its major shopping malls, renowned hospitals and medical facilities as well as regional arts, entertainment and sporting events, Pittsford is primarily a residential community with approximately 2% of its land area devoted to commercial, industrial and office use. Pittsford residents enjoy an average commute time of only 19 minutes, one of the shortest in the USA. One of our strategic priorities has been to encourage the redevelopment of our Monroe Avenue commercial area. This district has become one of the top retail markets in the region, host to department stores, specialty shops and a variety of restaurants including a Cheesecake Factory. The village has shopping and restaurants on Main and State Streets, in Northfield Commons off State Street, and on Schoen Place along the Erie Canal.

The Pittsford community offers a wide variety of housing styles including single family homes, condos, townhouses and apartment units. Within these styles there is a wide range of housing values from $75,000 to over $2 million. Housing values are extremely stable and have experienced a consistent growth over the last decade. The architectural styles of the houses represent the more than 200 years the Town of Pittsford has been in existence, and several are on the National Register of Historic Places. We have great pride in our history, and Pittsford is a leader in historical preservation.

Recognized nationally for educational excellence, the Pittsford Central School District provides a distinctive curriculum to meet the needs of a talented student population. Curricular offerings range from Honors and AP classes in all major academic areas to regents-level collaborative instruction for students requiring additional academic support. Both of our district high schools have been ranked among the top high schools in America. Both district middle schools are on New York State's "Schools To Watch" list, and one elementary school was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. We are also fortunate enough to have two liberal arts colleges: St John Fisher College and Nazareth College. Pittsford was recently identified by the U.S. Census Bureau as the second most educated community in New York State and fifty-first in the country.

The Town of Pittsford was an early leader in preserving green spaces for future generations. The "Greenprint for Pittsford's Future" is a nationally recognized program resulting in the preservation of 1,200 acres of active and productive farmlands along with an additional 1,200 acres of environmentally significant areas, such as wetlands and woodlots. Today the Town of Pittsford has an additional 676 acres of active Town and County Parks. These areas provide opportunities for athletics, picnics, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Coupled with this are 35 miles of trails within the town along with 31 miles of sidewalks. The most significant trail is adjacent to the Erie Canal which provides nearly six miles of hiking and biking opportunities.

Pittsford is an extremely safe community with crime statistics well below the national and state averages. Many residents still do not lock their doors, nor do they hesitate to go for a walk after sunset. The vision statement for the Town of Pittsford is this: A community working together to preserve the past and pioneer the future.
