Imagine a community as old as America itself and you have Plattsburgh. Plattsburgh is a small U.S. city located on the western shore of Lake Champlain in the northeastern part of the state of New York. Plattsburgh was founded by Zephaniah Platt in 1785. The Champlain Valley has been at the center of many chapters of American history. As European's explored and developed the "New World", they used Lake Champlain as the original "North American Super Highway". It served as a vital transportation link between Montreal and New York City.

With its significant location on a major water thoroughfare and close to the US-Canadian border, Plattsburgh has been the site of a number of historic events including the Revolutionary War's Battle of Valcour and the War of 1812's Battle of Plattsburgh. In more recent times, the city has been distinguished primarily by its United States Air Force base and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, although it is also a node for tourists headed to the Adirondack Mountains.

Plattsburgh has been tied to a number of famous and infamous people. John Henry Hopkins, a former rector of Plattsburgh's Trinity Episcopal church was the author of the well-known Christmas hymn "We Three Kings of Orient Are." John Russell Pope, the architect who designed Plattsburgh's City Hall, was a famous architect whose work includes the Jefferson Memorial.

Within the City of Plattsburgh there are four parks on forty-six acres that include tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, lighted baseball and football fields, playgrounds and skating rinks. The City's Civic Center hosts a variety of trade shows, events and indoor soccer.

In and around the city are five golf courses, three museums, four art galleries, a public library, two miniature golf courses, five major shopping centers, two movie complexes, theatres, and three health clubs.

The City of Plattsburgh has its own beach and picnic area on the waterfront. Lake Champlain, a vast and magnificent inland sea, is 121 miles long and 12 miles across at its broadest point. 100 feet above sea level and surrounded by mountains rising to 5,000 feet, its setting is as dramatic as any in Europe or the American West. It is a spectacular place for boating, wind surfing, or fishing, enjoyed each year by residents and visitors alike.

Lake Champlain is every water lover's dream come true. The spectacular setting, gentle breezes and comfortable temperatures make it hard to resist sailing, boating or windsurfing these waters.
And then there are the historical lighthouses, the un-crowded beaches, the lakeside restaurants, and the historical communities hugging its shoreline. You can even watch for Champy - our legendary cousin of the Loch Ness monster.
