Seneca Falls, a busy village of over 9,000, because of the water power of the falls and rapids, which attracted businesses which used the natural energy to develop mills, distilleries, tanneries, and factories of all types. A picturesque village, by the mid 1800's, begun building a reputation as a center of social and religious reform. In 1998 the 150th anniversary of Seneca Falls' designation as the birthplace of Women's Rights was held here. The town recently received national attention as the likely inspiration for the fictional town of Bedford Falls in Frank Capra's classic holiday movie, "It's A Wonderful Life," starring Jimmy Stewart. It is one of the gateways to the internationally know Finger Lakes region with its estate wineries located along the shores of Cayuga and Seneca Lakes.
