New York Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Somers, New York

Population: 18,000

Located in Westchester County

The town of Somers is located in Northern Westchester County, approximately 25 miles north of White Plains and 50 miles north of Manhattan. Somers' population is 18,000. Possibly the last rural outpost in Northern Westchester, Somers is marked with softly rolling hills colored by evergreens. Delightful scenic effects are created by its neat stone walls crisscrossing the land, and its many lakes and reservoirs.

A town that has grown significantly in the past ten years, Somers' beautiful farmland has been gradually developed into many pleasant executive neighborhoods, offering good, solid values in housing. The beauty of this housing is the lots are large enough to leave the homeowner's feeling like they are surrounded by the country, as neighbors are not right on top of each other. It is not unusual to look out and see deer grazing in the yards.

Somers has Reis Park offering ball fields, playgrounds, six lighted tennis courts, a picnic pavilion, fitness trails and the town library. Koegel Park features nature trails, picnic sites and a woodland flower preserve. Bailey Park hosts many fine concerts.

The Lasdon Estate is a Westchester County Park and is the site of the Vietnam War Memorial. Lasdon Bird Sanctuary and the Muscoot Interpretive Farm are also county parks offering many interesting programs throughout the year.

Numerous historic buildings remain as outstanding examples of the 19th century environment, such as Mount Zion Church (1794) and the Wright-Reis Homestead (1867), donated to the town by Carolyn Wright Reis.

Somers is not lacking in entertainment for people of all ages, from tennis in the summer to golf almost all year round, there is always something to do. Winter offers fantastic splendor and stillness that invites invigorating activities such as snowmobiling, skiing, and ice fishing, or the cozy relaxation of enjoying a drink by the fire.

Somers is close enough to both White Plains and Manhattan that a daily commute is feasible, and in fact many residents do indeed commute to those two regions. So, if you want to escape the lights of the city, and instead trade them in for the lights of the stars, look no further than Somers! We are waiting to welcome you home!
