Suffern, New York
Population: 11,006
Located in Rockland County
The town of Suffern got its name from John Suffern of County Antrim, Ireland. In 1763 he arrived in Philadelphia where he spent a period doing business there before moving into the Rockland area.
John Suffern was a teacher, farmer and store owner, he also owned a grist mill and potash manufacturing plant. He built his house at one of the many historic sites in the village at the intersection of Washington and Layefette Avenues. He went on to become a member of the town board, a judge in Rockland County's Court of Common Pleas, a member of the State Assembly and a state senator. He died at age 95, in 1813.
Rockland became a county when it was determined that it was becoming difficult administering justice to the then combined area that was then Orange county. Rockland was split off from Orange County based on the geographical mountain boundary that now separates them.
