The City of Syracuse was established in the year 1847. It has an estimated population of 500,000 people and an approximate size of 26.0 square miles. It is located in the heart of Central New York. Its name came from a Sicilian town that also lay near salt springs. Syracuse was once the capitol of the Iroquois Confederacy under Chief Hiawatha. Pioneers who arrived in the late 1700's, established salt works which provided salt for much of this country, and created an industry that thrived for nearly one hundred years. Syracuse enjoys a four season climate with marked seasonal changes in a region of rolling hills, flat plains, and many lakes and streams. Syracuse University boasts a large domed facility lending host to its nationally awarded basketball, football and lacrosse programs, as well as many entertainment activities. Downtown Syracuse was once known as Central New York States primary commercial center, and is the areas center for entertainment and cultural activities. In downtown, you will see old architecture demonstrated in many buildings, fine old churches and other structures. It is an important industrial and commercial center, and boasts an excellent education network and cultural and recreational opportunities to rival any major city.
