Stony Point, New York

Stony Point is the northernmost town in Rockland, and therefore, the most remote. It is known for its rocky terrain and the rustic quality of its lifestyle.

Stony Point is situated between the Hudson river and the Ramapo Mountains. The topography of the Town is characterized from west to east by steep slopes, rolling foothills, elevated plateaus, and river plains and wetlands. The steep slopes of the Ramapo Mountains occupy the western and northern sections of the Town (generally located within the Palisades Interstate Park) and have slopes ranging from 20 to 40 percent and higher, with elevations ranging from 600 to 1000 feet. The highest elevation is at Rockhouse Mountain (1,283 feet).

A major influence on the physical development of the Town is Cedar Pond Brook, which originates in the Ramapo Mountains and drains into the Hudson River. Through time, the Brook has formed a deep gorge through the developed areas and has resulted in a distinct north-south division. Besides Cedar Pond Brook, the Town is also drained by the Minisceongo River, Doodletown Brook, Lake Boyce, and Beechy Bottom Brook.

The hamlet of Stony Point has the largest population and greatest concentration of commercial and industrial uses within the town. The main residential pattern - of single family homes on standard sized lots - is predominant, excepting for some mountainous areas south of Route 210 and west of Thiells Road.

Recreation or park development along the Hudson, and restoration of passenger service on the West Shore rail freight lines are two other possible future developments that would influence land use patterns in the town.
