New York Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Victor, New York
Population: 9,500
Located in Ontario County
Victor is a peaceful community in northwestern Ontario County. The town's homesites are nestled among the glacially formed gently rolling hills, which are rich in heritage beginning with the first inhabitants - the Seneca Indians.
Boughton Hill today is a crossroads: however during the 17th century, it was the site of the Seneca Nation's principle village "Gannagaro". From this stronghold, the populous Senecas guarded the Iroquois Confederacy from western invasion. Thus they were called "Keepers of the Western Door". The French and British rivaled for supremacy in Seneca country.
Agriculture became the town's most important industry. Victor's proximity to the Erie Canal opened new markets to farmers, with railroads expanding these markets even farther beginning in the 1840's. Produce warehouses and new industries were located along the tracks in the Village of Victor and in Fishers.
For a small rural town, Victor has had several significant industries in its history, such as Wilcox-Johnson Tank Company and Victor Preserving Company. An important industry to the community, Locke Insulators, was founded by Fred M. Locke, the inventor of the porcelain insulator. Locke also discovered a glass that later became known as Pyrex. The insulator plant is still open, under different ownership.
Victor's school system enjoys the reputation of being one of the finest in the area. In 1995 Money Magazine rated Victor one of the top 100 school systems in the nation. School buildings are located on about 150 acres of land providing a unique campus setting and spacious area for recreation and further expansion.
Victor is within commuting distance from Rochester employment, recreation, shopping and colleges. East View Mall, within the town's borders, is one of the area's premier shopping centers. As a result, suburban growth has reached this rural community. Nevertheless, a large portion of the town's land remains farmland. With a population of 9,500 the community maintains a small town friendly atmosphere.
