Cooleemee, North Carolina

Cooleemee has a population of 924 as of the 2002 census and approximately 440 households. We are located in the southeastern tip of Davie County approximately 6 miles from Mocksville, 25 miles from Winston Salem and Statesville, 25 miles from Statesville, 35 miles from Greensboro, and 12 miles from Salisbury. We are located in the Piedmont Triad area - the Heartland of North Carolina.

Cooleemee was built as a cotton mill village in 1898 on the shoals of the South Yadkin River. A bit of interesting history is the town's name "Cooleemee". Richmond Pearson, a plantation owner in this area, borrowed the name from the Kulami tribe of Creek Indians in Alabama. "Kulami" is said to mean "place where the white oaks grow".

Timber, flue-cured tobacco, greenhouse and nursery producers, milk, beef cattle, poultry products, soybeans and corn are some of the agricultural products grown in our area. Forests in our area are mostly hickory, oak and pine.

Our Town was incorporated in 1985. We have a volunteer Fire Department and a shopping area that has approximately 20 businesses. Our civic groups are the Cooleemee Civitan Club, the Cooleemee Senior Citizens Club, Cooleemee VFW, Cooleemee Historical Association and Master Gardeners of Davie County.

We currently have seven churches in town, consisting of Cooleemee Church of God, Cooleemee First Baptist Church, Cooleemee Presbyterian Church, Cooleemee United Methodist Church, Friendship Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and Victory Baptist Church.

The Town has a tremendous amount of community pride. We have a quiet community that provides a wonderful place to raise a family and is also very desirable for retirees to live. Because our town is people-oriented, everyone reaches out a helping hand to others. Folks can safely enjoy walking through our Town and children can enjoy bike rides. Our crime rate is low because of the excellent community-oriented police protection provided by our police department.

We provide a beautiful recreation park for everyone to enjoy. The Town's playground has a special section designed just for toddlers. There is also a larger area that has swings, sliding board and other equipment. Nearby is a basketball court where older youth enjoy basketball. We have the only public outdoor Olympic size swimming pool in Davie County complete with a large bath shelter where shower facilities are available. We also have tennis courts, regulation horseshoe pits, and a covered picnic area complete with outdoor grills available for the public to enjoy.
