Elizabeth City, North Carolina is a special place, rich in history yet progressive and growing. Situated in the far northeastern corner of North Carolina on the Pasquotank River and Intracoastal Waterway, the City lies just west of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and just south of Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Elizabeth City was once a major seaport where four-masted sailing ships carried goods to and from the new world. Today, the City offers free 48-hour boat dockage to travelers from around the world. The ?Rose Buddies," the world-renowned waterfront ambassadors, greet visiting boaters with a rose, wine and cheese.

Downtown Elizabeth City welcomes residents and visitors alike with bookstores, coffeehouses, wine and gourmet food shops and specialty retail shops all located in historic buildings. Restaurants offer everything from fine Southern cooking to Japanese Sushi.

A walk along the shaded streets of the six historic districts stirs memories of a time when Blackbeard sailed the waters and Wilbur and Orville Wright stopped for provisions on their way to the Outer Banks.

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County School System serves nearly 6,000 students on 12 campuses (seven elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and one community school). Camden County Public Schools serve approximately 1,600 students on three campuses (a primary school, middle school and high school). Albemarle School serves students pre-K through grade 12. Academic highlights of the educational program include a comprehensive critical thinking program, a class limit size of 20, a phonics approach to reading, service learning, on-line technology, and long-distance learning by satellite with strong college preparatory focus. Glad Tidings is a Christian based nondenominational school offering pre-school starting with age 2 and classes for students in grades K-12. A-BEKA curriculum.

Elizabeth City boasts three institutions of higher learning - two colleges and a constituent university of the University of North Carolina. The City is also home to five major commands of the U. S. Coast Guard and Albemarle Hospital, northeastern North Carolina's regional medical center. The Museum of the Albemarle, one of three branch museums of the N. C. Museum of History, will soon open its new 50,000 square foot facility on the city's waterfront.

Albemarle Hospital, a 182 bed regional medical center, provides state-of-the-art services and technology. More than 100 physicians representing nearly every medical specialty practice here or at the hospital?s affiliates in Dare & Gates counties. Two other emergency medical care facilities are available. Emergency medical transportation is provided by Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Medical Services and the Pasquotank Camden Rescue Squad (252-335-1524). Should the occasion arise, the hospital can request the services of Nightingale, an emergency helicopter to specialized service in the Hampton Roads Area. EastCare Emergency Helicopter is also available from Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. Lifeflight is available from Duke University Medical Center. The United States Coast Guard transports patients from waterways and offshore to Albemarle Hospital. Albemarle Hospital is located at 1144 North Road Street in Elizabeth City.
