Frisco, North Carolina

Located in Dare County

The Outer Banks is a string of long, lithe barrier islands that fringe northeastern North Carolina. Dotting the islands are 16 communities, each with its own distinct character and all of them family-oriented and friendly. Frisco is one those villages- it offers quiet living, great climate, wonderful food and many forms of entertainment.

Frisco is heavily wooded on the soundside, and the homes are tucked back into the trees so you can't really tell how many houses are there. There are no hotels or motels, but there are many ocean- and soundside cottages for rent. Frisco is home to one of the National Park Service campgrounds, a great place for secluded camping among the sand hills. Two other campgrounds in Frisco are very popular for their isolated camping among the trees. Fishing is great at the Cape Hatteras Pier, locally called the Frisco Pier. There's an airfield at Frisco, where air tours are popular. Some great art galleries are here, too. The quietude of Frisco makes a vacation feel intimate and special, and visitors who come here once often return again and again.

Tiny Frisco houses are part of the shady and serene Buxton Woods, where nature walks are a must. It is also home to the nationally recognized Frisco Native American Museum. The tranquil museum is filled with authentic Indian artifacts and educational displays. Be sure to tap the drum for good luck when you leave. The site of an ancient Indian village has been found near the museum and is being excavated.

Recreation:
Fresh seafood dominates the dining scene. If shopping is more your style there are many offerings, including art galleries, candy stores, a sportsman's store, and beach and camping supply stores.

If you prefer the great-outdoors and all the activities that go along with that then Frisco offers something that will help you entertain the whole family. Try air tours, mini golf, go-karts, motor boating, kayaking and fishing on the pier or in the surf.

Floating between the Atlantic Ocean and an inland system of wide, shallow sounds, Frisco's best quality is its remoteness from mainland ways yet its easy accessibility via bridges and ferries. The Outer Banks is world renowned for fishing, surfing, windsurfing, hang gliding, kayaking and bird watching, but there is more to these islands and villages than outdoor adventure.

Historical Significance:
The first English colony settled here in 1587, and their story is relived summer evenings at The Lost Colony, the nation's longest running outdoor drama. The Wright brothers flew the first-ever powered flight here in 1903, and the history of flight is immortalized at a national park in Kill Devil Hills. Four lighthouses at Corolla, Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke, have helped guide ships through the infamous Graveyard of the Atlantic since the 1800s.

Frisco is small, but offers a world away from the busy hubbub of the East Coast. It is like a hidden treasure just waiting to be found; commuting is easy and yet you're in the middle of nowhere when returning home from the "big city."
