Lexington was settled in 1775, named in honor of the Revolutionary War battle in Massachusetts, and incorporated in 1828. It is the county seat of Davidson County.

Throughout its history Lexington has been a seat of government, a furniture and textile manufacturing center and home to a variety of endeavors. Its uptown is architecturally significant and is an excellent example of a viable small town commercial district that includes numerous historic churches. There are three separate school districts in Davidson County: Lexington City School District, Thomasville City School District, and Davidson County Schools. The Davidson County Community College, located five miles north of Lexington, offers a curriculum in three areas: college parallel, vocational technical training, and adult education.

Lexington is famous worldwide for its barbecue. Pork that is cooked in time-honored ways with secret sauces, served chopped or sliced, has provided Lexington with a unique claim to fame. The annual barbecue festival on the last Saturday in October celebrates the relationship that barbecue shares with Lexington. Held since 1983, the one day celebration in Uptown includes barbecue, arts and crafts, entertainment and a chance to capture the flavor of Lexington

Shopping opportunities include antique and craft shops, an old-fashioned candy store, gift and accessory stores, art galleries, clothing, hardware, books, home furnishings and other specialty stores. They are conveniently located in charming Uptown and in a variety of shopping areas throughout the city.

Lexington is home to Bob Timberlake, internationally renowned artist and home furnishings designer. Visit his gallery and museum, which showcase his art, home furnishings and accessory lines, located just off Interstate 85 at exit 94.

High Rock Lake, with its 356-mile shoreline, is dotted with homes, cottages, free boat ramps and one campground. Boating, water skiing and fishing opportunities abound. High Rock Lake was the site of the 1994-1998 Bassmaster's classic, the "world's most prestigious fishing tournament."

At the Richard Childress Racing Shop and Museum, see the trophies of this Winston Cup champion and his other drivers. Tour the shop and see how cars are built. The souvenir shop specializes in Dale Earnhardt and Richard Childress souvenir items. Located at #2 Industrial Drive, Welcome, NC, convenient to the Lowes Motor Speedway.
