North Carolina Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Monroe, North Carolina
Population: 26,228
Located in Union County
Monroe is a good example of an old Southern county seat with its courthouse square and legal center. Founded in 1844, Monroe developed as a business center with the cotton industry and the railroad as key early influences. The downtown retains the renovated old Italianate red-brick courthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the South Monroe Historic District, an area with magnificent mansions as well as more modest homes and apartments. Downtown Monroe is the focus of a revitalization effort financed by city, county and private money aimed at attracting new businesses as well as encouraging historic preservation.
There is more to Monroe than its historic buildings. In addition to the Monroe Airport, there are many neighborhood shopping centers, Monroe Mall, Union Regional Medical Center, and Union Technical Educational Center, all serving the needs of Monroe residents.
Monroe is located in the heart of beautiful Union County, Charlotte's next door neighbor. With its rolling hills and variety of lifestyle choices from new suburban neighborhoods to golf course communities to rural hideaways, family farms, and country estates, Union County offers a reasonable cost of living excellent schools, relatively low taxes, growing business opportunities, and excellent access to Charlotte's business centers, airport, and cultural and shopping facilities.
