Shelby has many things to do in and around the area. Below are just some of the recreational aspects that enhance the quality of life in Shelby.

Royster Golf Course
Ideas for a Golf Course arose when Dr. and Mrs. S.S. Royster announced the donation of approximately 50 acres of land to the City of Shelby for a new Municipal Park on April 26th, 1948. This land was developed and a nine hole course was dedicated as the Royster Memorial Golf Course as part of the Shelby Parks and Recreation Department.

This Golf Course is a unique pleasure to play because Shelby being a piedmont flat lands area, the course is filled with mountainous holes. Royster Memorial Golf Course offers many different programs for local patrons such as golf tournaments every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and hosts the City of Shelby Employee and Foothill's Merry-Go-Round Festival Tournaments annually. The course is open 364 days a year, closed Christmas day only.

Shelby City Carrousel
Shelby's City Park Carrousel (circa 1919) is one of a very few 'year-round' carrousels in a traditional park location. Twenty-nine original horses and three hand-carved replacements were restored in a joint effort of the City of Shelby and Shelby City Park Carrousel Friends, Inc. Along with thirty-two jumping horses, the Carrousel features twenty-eight colorful hand painted rounding boards and scenery panels. An authentic working Carrousel Band Organ provides stirring music. The "new" Carrousel opened in October 1998.

Volunteer painters, mechanics, organizers, fund raisers along with park staff spent many thousands of hours bringing this artifact of the American amusement industry back to useful life. Children of all ages may ride the wooden pony of their dreams for a mere 50¢. Parties and group reservations at the carrousel are available. Come to the beautiful Anne Dover Bailey Carrousel Pavilion and share our pride and joy.

"Rotary Special" Miniature Train
The Train at City Park is back!

The City of Shelby, Shelby Rotary Club members and volunteer mechanics have brought back a ride that has held a special thrill since the Rotary Club purchased it new in 1952. Every piece was meticulously rebuilt and brought up to like-new standards. Along the way, many local businesses and individuals made valuable contributions of time, expertise and money.

After years in storage, planning, and lots of labor, the Shelby Rotary Train, tunnel and track were restored in 2000. The new Depot with room for parties and picnics was completed in the fall of 2001.

One of the most popular park rides for cities and towns across America, the Miniature Train Company's G-16 Diesel Streamliner recalls the golden age of American rail transportation. If you and your family love trains, you're sure to find your seat (for only 50¢) in one of three coaches pulled by the gleaming classic locomotive. Some things are just too good not to keep around. All aboarrrrd!!!

Shelby Aquatics Center
Shelby Aquatics center opened in June of 1996 and is one of the premier swimming facilities in the South. The Ten Lane Olympic size pool has a rim flow system without gutters, automatically maintained chemical system, a Colorado Timing System, a three-meter diving board and a one-meter board over the deep end. A teaching/training pool was also completed for small children and teaching swim lessons. A covered picnic pavilion, full kitchen/concession area and bathhouse are also a part of the pool area. Each year thousands of people use this facility, which is open to the public from June until August. In 2003 over 700 swimmers from across the region participated in the Junior Olympic Qualifier.
