Amherst is located in Lorain County in the northern part of Ohio. Just to the north is Lake Erie and 30 mi. to the east is Downtown Cleveland. Cleveland is easily reached via Interstate 90 which passes through Amherst. Amherst can trace its beginnings back to its settlement date of 1811. Amherst’s first establishments were a gristmill, sawmill, and sandstone quarries. Today, Amherst is a wonderful community which has retained its small town friendliness which is complimented by local businesses and excellent schools. The historic "Olde Town" business area of Amherst is reminiscent of the quaint, small town atmosphere that is missing in many communities today. The "Olde Town" area is an 1800’s historic village which is the host for the annual Christmas Walk, Amherst Tree Lighting Ceremony plus the arrival of Santa at City Hall on the first Friday in December. Amherst features an array of flea markets, apple orchards, antique shops, golf courses and nature trails.

Amherst is ideally located only 30 miles west of downtown Cleveland.
