Avon Lake, located between Cleveland and Lorain, is part of the Lorain - Elyria metropolitan area. The city stretches for five miles along Lake Erie forming a northward arch into the lake. From north to south, its widest point measures about two and a half miles. The total area of Avon Lake is about 12 square miles (11.64 square miles).
The city lies on a part of Tract Seven of the Connecticut Western Reserve, lands reserved for families whose farms had been destroyed or who lost their belongings during the Revolutionary War. Originally known as Troy, the township was renamed Avon Township in 1824.
Originally a farming community, Avon Lake specialized in grape production. Some land is still farmed. In 1926, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company built its power plant on Lake Road. Thereafter, industry took root, and today, Avon Lake enjoys a diversified, expanding industrial base. The city is currently expanding the Pin Oak Parkway, which will open up 302 prime acres for high technology, non-polluting light industrial uses.
The Ford Motor Company's Ohio Assembly Plant began operations in 1974 and covers 230 acres. The facility employs over 3,000 individuals. Avon Lake is also home to the first Fortune 500 company in Lorain County, PolyOne, an international leader in the chemical industry.
Avon Lake is not too far from attractions like Geauga Lake & Wildwater Kingdom for the hot summer months, and close to several ski resorts for the winter months. Avon Lake does experience four distinct seasons and there is nothing quite like the crisp, fall mornings with the leaves turning glorious shades of gold, orange and brown.
Avon Lake is growing quickly because of all it can offer its residents, new and old alike. The district school report card rating is "excellent".
