Ohio Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Chesapeake, Ohio
Population: 1,073
Located in Lawrence County
Chesapeake, Ohio borders the Ohio River at the Southernmost part of the state. Six architecturally interesting bridges span the Ohio River, connecting this region with various locations in both Kentucky and West Virginia. Because of these bridges, metropolitan Ashland, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia are just minutes away from virtually anywhere in the county.
Life along the canal is different from virtually the rest of the country and is reminiscent to life in the "old country" - England, with mules pulling barges, and a slower pace of life. Much of that has now changed, but parts of the canal have retained a sense of that history so that people can appreciate all that is great about Chesapeake.
Today cars, and bridges play a bigger role than barges and mules; and Chesapeake is just a short drive from large cities on other side of the river. Chesapeake has been lucky to escape a lot of the industry that has come to this part of Ohio, and has remained largely a rural area. With only 900 residents, Chesapeake is a small, close-knit town.
Homes are well-established in this area, which is hardly surprising seeing former residents relied on the river for their livelihood. Housing reflects the country feeling, and the average home here will cost a homeowner $60,000 and up. Many of the homes are close to the river, and have wonderful views of the river, and the surrounding terrain.
Chesapeake has all the charm that the Ohio Valley has to offer. Complete with bed and breakfast inns, Chesapeake brings American History to life. Why not see for yourself all the things that make this Ohion town so wild and wonderful!
