Come For a Visit...

Reserve a room at one of Cincinnati's oldest (and most hidden) establishments: the Vernon Manor Hotel. It offers several weekend packages, but last-minute deals can be found. And the kids will have a good time hanging out with Armored Hammer, a pig from Cincinnati's 2000 Big Pig Gig public art exhibit who greets patrons in the hotel lobby.

Start at the Cincinnati Zoo. Mingle with the Zoo's polar bears, new lion cubs and baby rhino. Then, drive five minutes to Eden Park. Let the kids burn off some energy with a hike or on the park's playground near the Overlook.

Have dinner at Vernon's Manor. New England lobster tail and a half-pound of peel-and-eat shrimp for $16.99 a person is offered on Fridays. Live jazz is scheduled for weekends, too.

At night, take the kids to a movie at the Newport on the Levee movie theater. Parking is only $1, and the trip from the hotel is less than two miles.

Head east on Columbia Parkway and reserve a room at the Mariemont Best Western, a charming, Tudor-style building, garnished inside with imported rugs and antiques.

Begin the afternoon by frolicking in Woodland Mound, one of Hamilton County's prized parks. Then, head back west on Columbia Parkway for dinner at the Precinct, a favorite local steakhouse. Or, for a smaller bill, try Allyn's Café for Mexican and Cajun. Afterwards, keep heading west to downtown for a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert at Music Hall.

Cap the night by driving back east and hitting Stanley's, a dive known for quality live music and local flavor.

Begin the afternoon at the Museum Center in Cincinnati. Take in an Omnimax flick, or enjoy the wonders of the Natural History and Science Museum. Then, traipse further west and spend an hour or two in Mt. Airy, Cincinnati's largest park. Bring along some discs for a challenging game of Frisbee golf. Fido might want to come, too, since Mt. Airy is home to the city's only dog park.

For dinner, go to the Heinke Winery in Westwood. And for the evening's highlight, hit the Belterra Resort and Casino and try to win back some of the day's expenses. The boat is close to the night's quarters, too--just seven miles from the Rosemont.
