Manchester history Flatboats were used by the newcomers to this area. They came down the river using the rafts, which were about 40 feet long. When they came to a spot they wanted, they just came ashore, dismantled their raft and used the good hardwood planks to build their new homes. In 1790, one of these new settlers was Nathaniel Massie. He hoped to found a new colony and offered the first 25 people who joined him property in the new town plus acreage nearby. He found some "takers" and soon had 30 people join him. By March, 1791, there was a stockade built and the settlement was enclosed. Since he came from Manchester, England, he named his new settlement Manchester after his own home town. It was the fourth permanent settlement in the state.
