Monroe, Ohio

Population: 51,000
Located in Butler County

The Village of Monroe was platted in 1817 by John H. Piatt and Nathaniel Sackett, Jr. Mr. Piatt was a merchant in Cincinnati. During the War of 1812, he was the largest army contractor in the West. He never lived in Monroe; his interest was strictly financial.

Nathaniel Sackett, Jr. was the man who actually settled in Monroe and guided its growth during the early years. He and his family came to Ohio in 1816. Mr. Sackett purchased a farm owned by John Baker, atop what was known as Baker's Hill. This was to become the site of old Monroe. The Sackett family lived in Baker's double log house for many years. Since he was the local preacher for the Methodist group, or "Class" as it was called, one room of the cabin served as a place of worship until a frame church could be built on the same site as the present church.

The first plat of Monroe had a Main Street (now Old Street) with three cross streets (now Lebanon, Church, and Elm). The town was named for President James Monroe who took office the same year. In the early years, Monroe was mainly a farming community. Located halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton, it was also a major stagecoach stop on the Great Miami turnpike.

The City of Monroe has five designated parkland sites ranging in size and amenities. One of them is Community Park, which is located on South Main Street. Community Park is also the location of the annual "Monroe Concert in the Park". Another park that is widely used is Oaklawn Park. It is located on Oaklawn Drive in the Whispering Oaks Subdivision. You can enjoy an afternoon or warm evening on the swings with your children.

This area was rural in nature, and although that is not the case any longer, the country is not far away. And with four distinct seasons, Monroe and the surrounding countryside has plenty for the outdoor enthusiast to enjoy. From sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter months, to watching the budding of greenery and enjoying the songs of birds in the spring, to loving the summer months where the kids keep cool under the sprinklers, to the crunch of freshly-fallen leaves underfoot, Monroe has a season sure to delight everyone.

Another delight is that of homes! New subdivisions are currently under construction, and the builders have kept one eye on the terrain and made the best of the homes and their environment. Subdivisions range in price from the low $80's all the way up to the mid-$500's. All homes come in a variety of styles, including Cape Cod, Colonials, ranch homes, and Victorian style homes. If you can dream it, they can build it!

Monroe is a prime place to live because of its great location, being midway between Dayton and Cincinnati. This is a community on the move and growing; one visit here and you'll see why!
