History of Montgomery
In 1795 Cornelius Snider, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, left his comfortable home in Montgomery, New York to make his way west through the Northwest Territory. With Snider were twelve members of his family who traveled with him through Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) to the Ohio River, up the Little Miami River, and finally to what is now downtown Montgomery.
Cornelius Snider and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Terwilliger bought two large portions of land in Montgomery by 1801. Terwilliger became Montgomery's first developer when he laid out plans for the new community in 1802 and had them recorded - a full month before the fledgling community to the south, Cincinnati, was recorded.
Montgomery was known for generations as a stopping point along the old "3-C" Highway (Cincinnati-Columbus-Cleveland).
In the late 1960's with Montgomery population approaching 5000, the community formed a citizen charter commission to develop a government structure. It was through this approach that Montgomery successfully developed a new City government effective January 1, 1971 following a vote of acceptance on November 3, 1970. As the City of Montgomery grew, another charter review committee was established in 1980. The result of the committee was Montgomery's current Charter, which was adopted in 1984 and provided for the current Council-Manager form of government.
The City of Montgomery is approximately 5.2 square miles in size and has an estimated population of 10,000. The City employs approximately 54 full-time and 40 part-time employees who in addition to elected officials and community volunteers, have dedicated themselves to providing top quality services to the citizens of our community.
