The area encompassing South Euclid, along with East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Lyndhurst, Richmond Heights and Euclid, was formed into the township of Euclid in 1809. It was named Euclid in honor of the Greek mathematician and patron of surveyors. When surveyors began to lay out proposed roads, they followed already established Indian trails. The intersection of what is now Mayfield and Green roads was the intersection of two Indian trails and was called South Euclid by early settlers. South Euclid became a village on October 13, 1917, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1941.

Today, the city of South Euclid is primarily a residential community of owner occupied single-family homes. The latest census lists its population as 23,537, 24% of whom are over 60 years old and 23% of whom are under 18. The city is home to three retail shopping centers, a branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library and a variety of churches and synagogues. Ninety-eight percent of the city's 4.67 square miles is developed and 40 acres of land are dedicated to city parks. Recreational facilities include four municipal parks (Bexley, Quarry North, Quarry South and Victory), one Metropark (Euclid Creek Reservation), three swimming pools, baseball and softball diamonds, fitness trails, picnic areas and tennis courts.
