Springfield, Ohio in Clark County is a 412 sq. mile area located in west-central Ohio. As for higher education, twelve universities & colleges are located within a 50 minute drive of Springfield. Located in Springfield are Wittenberg University, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, enrollment of 2,000. The University, a Phi Beta Kappa institution, is ranked as one of the 80 best liberal arts colleges in the nation. Also there is a 2 year community college (Clark State) which is accredited by the North Central Assoc. of Colleges and Schools which offers associate degrees in 35 technologies. Over 200 research companies and organizations operate within a 30-minute radius. The largest area research facility, Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), functions as the development, engineering, and logistics center for the US Air Force and is located 20 minutes west of Springfield, employing 1,600 civilians from Clark County. WPAFB receives approximately 40% of the US Air Force?s $2.5 billion research budget and works in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Air Force Institute of Technology.
