University Heights, Ohio
Population: 14,146 Located in Cuyahoga County
University Heights is known as the "City of Beautiful Homes". Approximately 4,000 single-family, about 200 duplexes on Cedar Rd. and Warrensville Center Rd., and about 1,000 apartment units along Cedar Rd. at Fairmount Circle, and in the Huntington complex at Cedar Rd. Single-family housing is mostly colonial and Tudor style. Purvis Park has a new swimming pool, renovated recreation playground, 11 tennis courts for individual and league play, cycling club, women's softball, jogging club, arts and crafts program for children, teen basketball, outdoor summer band concerts. Today University Heights spans only 1.9 square miles, yet is home to 14,790 residents. It is ideally situated in the heart of the east side's suburbs. Ask anyone from University Heights what's so special about the city and two words keep cropping up -- "warm" and "friendly". Drive along the beautifully tree-lined streets on a Sunday afternoon and it's easy to understand. An endless parade of walkers, joggers, and families out for a stroll are everywhere, stopping periodically to chat with neighbors. Although originally settled by the Scots, today the city is a melting pot of cultures, races and religions, providing a rich multi-cultural atmosphere. It is one of only a few eastern suburbs that are successfully integrated. "We've been able to achieve smooth integration because it has been a priority for many years," says Mayor Beryl E. Rothschild. The city works hard to promote the feeling of community. Town meetings are held at City Hall, where residents from different parts of the city gather to meet each other and discuss what's on their minds. A monthly newsletter, fondly called the 'garbage gazette' because it is delivered by trash haulers while making their regular rounds, keeps homeowners abreast of events and services in the city.
